Background:The Government of Punjab has initiated the Cluster Development Initiative to enhance the capacity of industrial clusters. The Readymade Garments Cluster is one of the four selected industrial clusters under the CDI. In order to overcome the challenge related to product design and development for the RMG cluster companies, UNIDO in collaboration with Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) is establishing this ADRC under the CDI project in Lahore. The objective of ADRC is to support RMG cluster SME’s through provision of locally available and competitive design services and market intelligence.


Challenge

TEXTILE is one of the important sectors as well as one of the largest employers in Pakistan contributing 40% of the skilled and semi-skilled workers employment. It also constitutes the largest share in the export market i.e. 58% of exports of Pakistan. Textiles being the largest industrial sector contributes 5.28% to GDP and consumes about 40% of banking credit to manufacturing sector. Within textile sector, Readymade Garment is one of the largest sub-sectors with 22.43% share in total exports from Pakistan. This significant share has been on the rise, both in terms of quantity and value in the recent years.


LAHORE is not only the cultural capital of Pakistan; it is also one of the major industrial cities of Pakistan. 38% of readymade garments producers are located in and around Lahore with major specialization in Denim products.

Value

Govt of Punjab has initiated the Cluster Development Initiative to enhance the capacity of selected industrial cluster. UNIDO and Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) are jointly implementing this project under the framework of the Punjab jobs and competitiveness program. The purpose of CDI is to create an enabling environment for growth and prosperity of industries, to create better quality of life through economic uplift in Punjab and to up-grade technology and enhance productivity, quality and profitability of local industries. 

Readymade garments cluster is one of the four selected industrial clusters under the CDI project where UNIDO’s cluster development methodology is being implemented.
